Students at Murphy School are really lucky! We can use the Grolier Online Encyclopedias from school and home. Now that you have bookmarked Grolier Online at home it is time to go on a webquest to learn how to use this great tool. Grolier includes the New Book of Knowledge Encyclopedia, America the Beautiful Encyclopedia, and Amazing Animals of the World. It also has several dictionaries and thesauruses. Your job is to investigate some of these features.

Connecticut is a great state to live in with a rich history. The purpose of this WebQuest is to have the students use Grolier Online to answer questions about Connecticut. If you are doing this from home your parent(s) or guardian(s) must be part of your team. If you do not have internet access at home then you need to use the library computers. Come in first thing in the morning (8:30 – 8:50) or at the end of the day before bus dismissal to complete your assignment. You may also make arrangements with your teacher. The assignment is due before your next library class. Good luck!

• Print a copy of the “Gr4ConnWorksheet2010”  and Checklist if you do not already have one.
• Go to your subscription of Grolier Online Passport.
  At the left side of the Grolier Online Passport Main Menu find “America the Beautiful” and click on it to enter.
• Locate Connecticut on the map and click on it.
• Now you are ready to answer the questions on your worksheet. They are due back to your classroom teacher before next library class.

You will evaluate your work by using the checklist on the back of your worksheet. Check off the boxes on each list if you have done your best work. You may need to go back and correct your work before you can check it off on the checklist.

Now that you have completed your quest you should feel more confident using Grolier Online Passport. You will also know more about our lovely state of Connecticut.
You may want to further explore the “America the Beautiful” website by checking out the U.S. Topics, Timelines, and the Games tabs. It’s fun to use the online dictionaries, thesauruses or Feature Showcase and News Articles from the Main Menu too.

Cannot get on Grolier Online.

• Using the Internet go to: http://auth.grolier.com/admin_setup/grolier.htm or, simply click on this link: Grolier Online.
• When the Grolier Online site comes up, there will be boxes to fill in. Type in your user name and password listed on your bookmark.
• Bookmark the official Grolier Online site for future use. This subscription is made available to all third, fourth, and fifth grade Murphy students and staff each school year.
